I awoke the next morning to the faint glow of sunrise and the smell of something burning. "Dawn?" I started groggily as I turned over in my sleeping bag. "What is that smell?"

"Toast! Cooked with the goodness of the wilderness!" she chirped in reply while swinging a spatula around. She was already dressed, this time in a pink hoodie and black leggings. Her feet and head still wore the boots and hat from before. I sighed.

"Dawn, I'm pretty sure you don't make toast with a spatula," I told her patiently.

"When you're using a campfire instead of a toaster you do..." Dawn said sheepishly while pursing her lips.

"Dawn, here. I'll do it," I said with a sigh as I climbed out of bed. She nodded gratefully. Soon, we had decent toast, but not my best, on a log and started walking. We still hadn't made it to Jubilife last night, so we spent the night in 'the wilderness' instead. But we hoped to make it there before lunch. Shinx was running ahead in a heated game of tag with King. I had decided to name him Pharaoh, 'cause in his own way he was kingly. It was also to boost his self-confidence a bit. It seemed to be working. Dawn's eyes brightened a moment later. She whirled to me excitedly.

"I think we're almost there!" she exclaimed happily. I sharpened my hearing. Sure enough, I could already hear tidbits of conversation.

"Free poketch! Could be yours today! All you have to do is find our Three Poketch Clowns!"

"Trainer School now open! Come today!"

"Jubilife Contest, tomorrow at 10:00 am!" I recorded these silently. A poketch was the latest gadget, useful to anyone, even those who are not trainers. They're watches with a whole ton of cool applications. I considered dropping by the Trainer School as well. It would probably help me sharpen my skills, and would also aid Pharaoh in his training. Princess, too. And then there's the contest. I smiled. I heard that Poffins, some sort of pastry, helped pokemon participating in contests. And that meant cooking. Yep. Fate made contests for me. Definitely.

"Do you have a poketch, Lucas?" Dawn asked, holding up her wrist. Clipped to her sleeve was a pink poketch. I let out a low whistle of envy. She giggled. "I'm sure we could get you one while we're here!" I nodded happily. Jubilife sounded like it would be quite entertaining. Goodness, we wouldn't have time to get bored!

"Sound's good."

"Here we are!" I looked up in awe. Buildings towered high, but not so high you couldn't see the top. Dawn pointed excitedly down a street. "I hear at the GTS you can trade with people at the other side of the world!"

"Wow..." I whispered under my breath. Dawn whirled her head excitedly.

"And there's the Trainer School! I've always wanted to check that out," Dawn said wistfully, pointing to an older brick building. I chuckled.

"Hey, Dawn? Why don't we go to the Pokecenter and see what we can do for beds, okay?" Dawn hung her head sadly. "Then we'll have lunch, get me signed in the contest, then we'll drop by the Trainer School. 'Kay?" Dawn nodded, then froze.

"No, your poketch comes before the Trainer School." I sighed. She is, surprisingly, selfless.

"Okay. Poketch after signing me in. Then we'll go become smart-asses. Sound cool with you?"

* * *

I rubbed my stomach. We had just finished lunch, and we had eaten like kings... Well, for Dawn, queen. Now we were walking towards the Jubilife Contest Hall, and boy, was Dawn excited.

"Who are you going to use for the appeal? Oh, I hope you win!" she exclaimed happily. Now that she was full, she didn't have anything against the world. I nodded. Soon, we found ourselves infront of a large pink dome.

"Well, here we are," I murmured as I pushed the door open. Instantly, a guy in his twenties leaped before me.

"Are youz newz to daz contezt, sir?" he asked, swishing his shiny purple blue hair from side to side. I stared at him blankly. "Followza me, puleaze!" I followed, to shocked to speak. Dawn followed happily behind me.

"Actuallyz, you doz look veryz familiar. Have we met?" he asked. I shook my head in reply. I had never met anyone with such a strange accent. He looked at me disapointedly. "Oh."

"Jordan! What are you doing?" a girl who looked to be the same age as the man ran up to us hurriedly. "We, have to help Dexter rehearse his lines!" Jordan looked at her sadly.

"Doezant diz boy look familiar, to youz, Keira?" the girl, Keira, looked at me with a confused expression.  She cocked her head to the side.

"Hmmm... You're right. Where are you from?" the question was directed at me.

"Er... Twinleaf..." I answered, my eyes wandering to Dawn, who was busy introducing King to an white haired middle-age in a brown top-hat and suit.

"That's it!" Keira cried out excitedly, her brown hair bobbing. "He reminds me of Johanna!" I looked at her, surprised.

"Mom?" Keira looked at me, happiness shining through her chocolate eyes.

"Yes! Yes, Yes!" she replied. "I'm a genius! A genius!" she danced around, Jordan dancing behind her. I looked at them incredulously. The old man and Dawn approached us.

"What are you two doing?" the old man asked cautiously, as if he didn't actually want to know. Keira beemed at him.

"This kid is Johanna's son!" she exclaimed. The old man gasped.

"Well, son. I'm sorry for the lack of proper introduction. I'm Dexter, judge and MC of the Sinnoh Region contests. This is Jordan," Jordan flung his hair dramatically," and Keira, who are also judges." Keira winked. I cocked my head, confused.

"But how do you know my-" I started, but then Dawn interrupted.

"Lucas!" she whined. "Just sign up already!" I looked at her, slightly annoyed.

"Don't worry, son," Dexter said happily. "We've got it covered." Thus, I was dragged away.

"Dawn..." I started. She whirled on me.

"You said we'd 'quickly' sign you up! Now w-we..." she stopped, beginning to sob.

Although I felt bad for making her cry, I was also irritated. "I never said 'quickly'. What's your problem, anyways? The school's always gonna' be there, and if it's the poketch you're upset about, it's my problem if someone else gets it! So sizzle down!" As soon as the words left my mouth, I wanted them back. Dawn bit her lip nervously.

"I just wanted us to match!" she screamed, then ran off. I stood still, shocked. I thought of Barry and I's conversation, then instantly pushed the thought away. That's not what she meant. I began to follow her, but then we were separated by a stampede of people.

"Did you hear? That guy totally sweeped Keira's Buneary!"

"I know, right? And he only used a Turtwig, I hear!"

"Really? Do you know how long he's been training?"

"Apparently he only met the Turtwig the day before yesterday!"

"But how's that possible? Keira's known her Buneary since she was a kid!"

"Then how come it hasn't evolved?" This comment was treated with silence... At least I think it was... Okay, to be honest, I sorta spaced after the dude's description sounded so much like Barry... I followed the crowd curiously. Finally, we came to the Trainer School. I swallowed nervously. It made me think of Dawn. The gossipers pushed the large doors and I followed silently.

We  entered a large room... Or two smaller ones. The first was a classic classroom: Desks evenly spaced throughout the room, a large chalkboard at the front.. The only thing missing were the students and teacher, who were all crowded in a sort of oval shape in the second room.

"Keira!" Another woman in her twenties cried frantically, rushing forwards into the room. I hastily took her place. The second room was a sandy battlefield, obviously for training battles. On one side was the cheery judge Keira, cradling a brown pokemon with large brown ears and big beige puffballs on each and a sort of beige tutu. I could barely see a small beige puffball tail sticking out from behind it. And on the other side of the field... Was Barry.

"Barry!" I called, running toward him. His Turtwig turned his head at my exclamation groggily. I jumped a little at his bored expression when Barry finally noticed me.

"Oh, hey, Lucas! Wait... Where's Dawn?" I stared at him for a moment, then remembered that Dawn had called him. She must of told him things other then her nickname plan. Wait? How'd she get his number!? I knew Barry was guilty of her phoning me in the middle of the night! Anyways...

I looked away sheepishly. "We... Had an... argument." Barry raised  his eyebrows expectantly as I told him, but I didn't tell him anymore. He sighed, obvious disappointment weighing his voice down.  I glared at him. He turned his head up triumphantly.

"I beat that contest judge!" Barry said happily, and I glanced around him to see Keira crying onto the other woman's shoulder. I raised my eyebrows. Barry and his Turtwig were... Barbaric. "I know!" he continued. "Why don't we battle? Right now!"

I stared at him incredulously, but soon enough, I found myself on Keira's side of the field. I sighed as I fingered Pharaoh and Princess's pokeballs nervously.

"Are you ready?" Barry called from his side of the field. I smiled.

"Always."

"Okay. Go, Starly!" Barry exclaimed as he threw his pokeball into the air. In a flash of light, a Starly had appeared and was looking at me curiously. I grinned.

"Let's do this, Pharaoh!" I threw my pokeball in a similar manner, and soon, the newly-caught Shinx was looking at Starly with an intense expression plastered on his face.

Barry smiled, following it with a bow. "Ladies first." I glared at him, but ordered anyways.

"Pharaoh, kick it off with... Er... Spark?" I ended it in a sort of questioning tone, but Pharaoh continued without question, rushing towards the winged pokemon while the yellow rings that decorated at his paws lit up, generating a cascade of sparks. Starly stared at him with a frightened expression, but Barry just flicked his hair impatiently.

"Dodge it by flying up a little, then use a Wing Attack," he replied calmly. I grumbled in annoyance. How could Barry change so much in, what was it? Two days?!

Pharaoh continued to run as Starly fluttered upwards. Without waiting for a command, once within range, the Shinx reared up on it's hind legs, swiping at the flying target before it could really get anywhere. My jaw dropped while the bystanders cheered as Starly fell from the sky. I heard someone whisper that I was using telepathy, but really it was just Pharaoh doing his own thing. Starly looked up from its splat on the ground, anger flaring in its round black eyes. To tell the truth, I wondered what it thought it could do. I mean, Pharaoh was about to eat this dude, punks.

Pharaoh once again rushed towards the weakened Starly, but before Starly could respond, Barry barked angrily. "What about that Wing Attack?!" Starly flew towards the Shinx quickly, his left wing illuminated by a blue light.

When almost in contact, Starly tipped its wing more in Pharaoh's general direction. Pharaoh quickly spun out the way, but Starly followed his lead and hit the Shinx square in the back. Pharaoh mewled angrily before whirling towards his foe. He bit the Starly's wing before it had the chance to fly out of the way, dragging it down.

Starly let out a cry while the bystanders gasped. Pharaoh held the foe down as his rings began to glow with another shower of sparks. I heard a distinct gasp coming from Barry's direction as his pokemon broke out into a cold sweat.  I frowned. Although I knew the Starly would be fine after a trip to the poke-center, Pharaoh was going a little bit too far, eh? I'd have to work on that later. I saw Keira, who had a front row seat, look at me with a troubled gaze. I swallowed nervously. It was time I took control.

"Pharaoh, finish off that Spark, and if he's still up, use another Bite!" The bystanders cringed as the sparkling paws crashed into Starly's back. Starly gasped in pain, but stubbornly looked at his attacker. Pharaoh flashed a somewhat evil grin, then opened his mouth, but before biting his opponent, blue energy began to creep over his teeth, solidifying into ice just before Pharaoh lunged, fragmenting as Pharaoh's teeth made contact with the Starly's plumage. I heard a scream, and I looked at Pharaoh curiously. How in the world had he learned Ice Fang? But before I could make a move, Starly collapsed, and I heard a oh-too-familiar voice from the crowd.

"Lucas! I got you a Poketch!" Dawn cried bubbly, pushing her way through the crowd. She skidded to a halt after breaching the crowd, looking over the situation before turning her head to the side and asking one, simple question. "Uh... What happened?" I shook my head slowly, placing it in my palm as I returned Pharaoh, who looked way too satisfied with himself, with the other.  Barry looked at her, eyebrows raised.

"We battled." Dawn nodded understandingly (exactly how much did she understand? Likely nothing.), and said:

"Ah." '?!'

"See you two later," Barry murmured as he returned his beat-to-a-pulp Starly. He pushed his way through the now small crowd, sympathetic whispers surrounding  him. I watched him walk away sadly.

Dawn turned to me, excitement jumping around in her eyes. "See, it's blue! Like your pokedex!" With this, she held out the poketch. She was right. It was the exact same blue as the pokedex I received from Rowan. It was a watch, of course, with a diamond blue base and black strap. It had two red rectangular buttons by the screen for scrolling through the applications.

"Wow, Dawn, thanks."

"You're welcome! After all, now we're at the Trainer School!" she exclaimed.

'Although I doubt they'll give me a lesson after that... Unless it's on 'Pokemon Cruelty'.' But I didn't mention this to Dawn, and just told her that I needed to train for the contest. Dawn nodded, and we agreed to meet at the poke-center for dinner. As I walked through the last stranglers of the crowd, though, a boy my age asked if I was her boyfriend. I shook my head frantically, turning slightly red. But then I found myself with a grin similar to the one that had been seen on Pharaoh's face not too long ago.

"No, but if you wanted to date her, Pharaoh will get at you."  the boy looked frightened, then ran. Dawn's mother would be so proud.
Okay, scary Pharaoh. BAD boy. Bad boy, Pharaoh.

Yay rival battles! :la: I'm not even sure if you battle Barry in Jubilifle, but oh well. :meow:

Ah, next chapter is Lucas's first contest.... It's taking WAY too long to write.... :P

But I will get it done.... Eventually.... (DARN, just break up the contest into separate chapters, dumb head!)
